The Psychosocial Recovery Coach is an NDIS service aimed at helping participants lead fulfilling lives.
It’s designed to enhance social and economic involvement for those with psychosocial disabilities. The coach will work with participants, their families, and other support services to create and execute a recovery plan.
This service empowers participants to become more independent, handle everyday challenges, and gain more control over their lives.
Psychosocial disability is a term used to describe a disability that may arise from a mental health condition. Not everyone who has a mental health condition will have a psychosocial disability, but for people who do, it can have a severe and longstanding impact on their recovery. People with a disability as a result of their mental health condition may qualify for the NDIS.
A minimum of Certificate IV in Mental Health or Mental Health Peer work or similar training and/or two years’ paid experience in supporting people with mental health challenges.
Generally, Psychosocial Recovery Coaches will be funded in plans for people with psychosocial support needs. You do not have to choose a recovery coach if you do not want one. However, we recommend working with a psychosocial recovery coach if a participant has mental health concerns.
You can speak to your support coordinator or contact the NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator to find out how to get a recovery coach.
An NDIS planner or a Local Area Coordinator will support participants to choose a recovery coach best suited to their unique needs and preferences. Supporting participants to select a recovery coach in this way may require participants talking, in the first instance, with two or more providers before making a choice.
Psychosocial Recovery coaches will provide capacity building supports. They do not provide core type supports to complete activities of daily living and community, social and or recreational activities. The psychosocial recovery coach service is tailored to the needs of people with primary psychosocial disability, with a focus on coaching and collaborating with other services.
Depending on your plan or situation, you may have access to both.
The hours are based on your needs. Your NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator will work with you to decide on the number of hours you would need.
If you have a significant and permanent disability, injury or illness that affects your daily life, you may be eligible to access the NDIS.
