Finding and Keeping a Job (FAKAJ) is a plan specific funding item given to eligible NDIS participants who are interested in entering the workforce.
Very similar in nature to Disability Employment Services, participants with Finding and Keeping a Job in their plan can receive help from trained employment consultants and support workers to strengthen and learn the skills required to find and keep a job.
Once your NDIS funding is approved, you’ll have the option to select a provider to assist you with your capacity building and job seeking activities. It’s important to note that not all NDIS providers can provide finding and keeping a job services – they must also be a registered Disability Employment Services provider like breakthru.
Once you’ve selected a provider, you can then access assistance for a variety of different job seeking activities, including:
• Access to vocational activities
• Help finding work experience opportunities
• On the job training and support
Key skills development, which may include:
• Time Management
• Travelling
• Money Handling
• Assistance obtaining industry qualifications, which may include:
• White Card
• Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA)
• Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG)
Depending on your level of funding and employment goals, our support staff are available to work with you on-site to ensure you feel comfortable and supported while at work.
To be eligible for finding and keeping a job, you must first be an eligible NDIS participant. When you’re applying for your NDIS plan (or during your review period), you should mention your goal to find and keep a job.
While not required, you can also ask your school to submit formal written evidence outlining any capacity building exercises they recommend. If this isn’t an option, you can also ask your current disability services provider for an impact statement, or a letter of recommendation from your preferred medical practitioner to help support your case.
School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) is funding specifically given to someone who has recently graduated, or will soon graduate high school. While there is a lot of similarity between the two services, SLES has a stronger focus on pre-employment skills like money handling, travelling independently and proper conduct in an interview.
Finding and Keeping a Job on the other hand is available to eligible NDIS participants no matter what age or stage of life you may be in. Finding and Keeping a Job can also assist with pre-employment skills, but has a slightly stronger focus on work experience and on-the-job supports. Often, participants who receive SLES will also receive Finding and Keeping a Job after their post-school supports have concluded.
If you have a significant and permanent disability, injury or illness that affects your daily life, you may be eligible to access the NDIS.
