What is Improved Daily Living?

Out of the three primary categories in an NDIS plan, Improved Daily Living falls under the Capacity Building category. This sub-category is used to allocate funding specifically to be used for training or support to develop maintain or increase skills for independence and community participation.

Funds for Improved Daily Living are most commonly put towards  therapeutic support services. At breakthru we have OTs, Counsellors, Social Workers and Psychologists who can provide support under this category. Occupational Therapy services, can  provide access to functional assessments, environmental supports (home or workplace modifications) and prescribing assistive technology. OTs can also help build programs to achieve and build independence with everyday tasks such as showering, dressing, eating and enhancing community participation.

It’s important to note that while Improved Daily Living can be used to compile assessments and reports, the funding used to pay for any Assistive Technology or Home Modifications must come out of the Capital support purpose category.

How do I get funding for Improved Daily Living?

If you’re about to apply for an NDIS plan or your existing plan is about to be renewed, it’s important to compile as much information as possible. To access capacity building and improved daily living funding, you must be able to describe the barriers you face on a day to day basis (i.e. difficulty showering, cooking, or taking public transport).

In most circumstances it’s also advisable to have your GP write a letter detailing these barriers and any general recommendations they might have to improve daily living. For applicants that want to be certain, a functional assessment from a registered occupational therapist may also be worth while, however this is not required. breakthru can provide this service for customers and a fee for service model.
