Frequently asked questions

As of November 1st 2025, IEA takes over from the Disability Employment Services (DES) program. It continues to support people with disabilities, injuries, and health conditions as the Australian Government’s new disability employment program.

Support is now also available for people who may be able to work only a few hours each week, as well as for those not receiving income support payments from Services Australia.

To be eligible for IEA services, you must meet these criteria:

  • Have a disability, injury, or health condition
  • Be aged 14 or older and below the Age Pension age
  • Meet the minimum legal working age in your state or territory
  • Be an Australian resident
  • Not studying full-time (unless you are an ESL student)
  • Not working at or above your Employment Benchmark hours*

*This criterion does not apply to: Ongoing Support (Work Assist) participants, supported employment undertaken by NDIS participants, or participants in the Disability Employment Continuity of Support program.

If you meet these criteria, you can register with Breakthru directly for support or seek a referral from Services Australia. When visiting Services Australia, you may need to complete an ESAt if you haven’t already.

An ESAt is an Employee Services Assessment. It is a formal document that assesses:

  • The impact of a job seeker’s disability, illness, injury, or non-vocational barrier
  • A job seeker’s work capacity
  • The number of hours per week a job seeker can work consistently
  • What kind of support may be required

This assessment is conducted by an allied health professional from Services Australia. Services Australia is also known as Centrelink.

Yes. Job seekers must have a valid ESAt before starting IEA services with a provider.

If you’re unsure or need support, our team can help you with your ESAt or answer any questions. You can also visit this page on the Services Australia website.

There is no cost for job seekers to access these services. The IEA program is fully funded by the Australian Government, so you can receive support at no expense.

No. You’re not required to disclose this information if you’re not comfortable doing so.

If you decide to share it, our team at Breakthru can help you communicate with your employer.

Switching IEA providers doesn’t have to be complicated. If you would like to get started with Breakthru, simply reach out to our team, and we’ll help you through the process.

Get started in 5 easy steps

If you want to access our Inclusive Employment Australia services, it's important to check if you're eligible. If you're unsure or need help checking your eligibility, please contact us.

1

See if you’re eligible

Make sure to check your eligibility for IEA services. If you do not meet the criteria, you may not be able to access support. If you have any questions, please reach out to our team for help.

2

Complete your ESAt

Next, you will need to take an Employee Services Assessment (ESAt). This confirms your eligibility, assessed work capacity, and support requirements.

3

Find the right IEA provider

Find and register with a IEA provider that you trust to support you. Simply reach out to your chosen provider and attend a scheduled appointment.

4

Develop your job plan

You will then need to build a Job Plan. Your IEA provider will help you with this, outlining your mutual obligations and the support they will provide.

5

Find real opportunities in Sydney

You can then start scheduling meetings with your Career Coach, so that you can start your employment journey on the right foot.

Having people there to mentor and believe in me made all the difference. They reminded me that I can do this, even when I wasn't sure myself.
