Crystal is an avid artist living in the Western New South Wales town of Coonabarabran. After cultivating an impressive talent for creative arts, Crystal often finds herself creating new pieces in her spare time and enjoys trying different mediums.
As part of FOCUS 2021 and in celebration of International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD), Crystal presents her favourite pieces below. The Acrylic painting of a horizon below is titled “Light At The End OF The Tunnel”, which she donated to the new Cancer Centre at Dubbo Base Hospital, where she received treatments for many years.
Her watercolour portrait of a Philippine Eagle was also on display at the Dubbo Royal Show, where she won an award and was highly commended for her talents.
“My name is Crystal. I’m 42 years old from Coonabarabran NSW. I’ve been attending Breakthru for 21 years. During this time I have lived with with mental health disabilities and have battled cancer twice. My interest in art started in 2013. I have learnt various mediums including mixed media, acrylic/watercolour paints and pencils. Since starting my love and skills for art have developed greatly, with winning entries in various shows.
Art helps keep me distracted from my depression and reduces anxieties. Art gives me something to focus on encouraging me to have positive moods.
‘Light at the end of the tunnel’ painting I donated to the new Western Cancer Centre in Dubbo because as a cancer patient I have amazing support during my journey. Knowing I am not alone. I wanted to give back and remind others they too are not alone during ones cancer journey.”
